Salvador Dali (1904-1989) is arguably Surrealism's most accomplished and iconic practitioner.

Prolific and endlessly inventive, Dali worked in almost every possible artistic medium; film, sculpture, photography, fashion and of course painting. 

Since the beginning of his career Dali worked in the graphic arts. Some of his earliest etchings date to the 1930's. 

However his multiples from the 1960's and 1970's are most desirable. During this period Dali experimented with techniques and challenged the typical conventions of printmaking.

Some of Dali's innovations included filling snail shells or horns (stuffed with bread) with ink or firing ink bullets at lithography stones.

His iconography naturally included his fascinating characters, animals and fantasy that can be found throughout his oeuvre.

During the mid-1960's Dali began working with the publishers Sidney and Phyllis Lucas. Their works together are most sought-after and admired as the combined Dali's Surrealism with classical themes. 

This work "Le Singe et Le Leopard" (The Monkey and The Leopard) is from a suite of 12 engravings based on Le Bestiaire de la Fontaine.
